Working Hours for Student Visa Holders Changes

From 1 July 2023, work rights for international students will be capped again, but at a higher level of 48 hours per fortnight. This factsheet provides information on how this will work.


The summary of the changes is below:


If you are studying a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course for example a certificate or diploma qualifications, main student visa holder can work up to 48 hours per fortnight when course is in session. However, when the course is not in session student can work unlimited hours. Dependent student visa holder is limited to 48 hours of work per fortnight at all times.


If you are studying a Bachelor Degree, the main student visa holder can work 48 hours per fortnight when the course is in session. This work hours become unlimited when the course is not in session i.e. during a intermission. Dependent student visa holder is limited to 48 hours of work at all times.

If you are studying a Master Degree, the main student visa holder can work 48 hours per fortnight when the course is in session. This work hours become unlimited when the course is not in session i.e. during a intermission. However, the dependent student visa holder can work unrestricted.


If you are studying a Master Degree by research or a Doctorate Degree, the main student visa holder can work unrestricted working hours for both the main visa holder and the student's dependent visa holder.
